Abstract Computers have been used in medicine since about the 1950s. We showed a timeline of historical events in computerized medicine as well as the broad spectrum of medical applications where computers are used today. We discussed two of these applications, electronic records and decision support systems, listing some of their advantages and disadvantages. There are many motives for clinics and hospitals to computerize various processes and techniques: to increase quality, reduce errors, reduce costs, provide greater accountability, and increase efficiency. Laboratory information Management System (LIMS), is a software-based laboratory information management system which typically enables recording of all requests for all tests, workflow management, automated validation of test results and make the internal operations of the laboratory a relatively paper-free exercise. Supply chain management involves the complete circuit of production, distribution, and usage of supplies. It can be controlled by inventory control system. We have discussed types of the inventory control system which include Paper worksheets, Spreadsheets and Computerized inventory Summary 79 management systems, as well as the difference, advantages and disadvantages of each type. By implementing the computerized inventory control system at Beni-Suef University Hospital central lab we realized that computerized inventory management systems provide many benefits that are hard to be obtained by using paper methods or a spreadsheet method. |
