Abstract labor pain is one of the most severe pains that women experience during their life. Massage and aromatherapy are one of non-pharmacological interventions that are used to relieve pain during labor. Aim of the study was to examine the effect of back massage with lavender oil on reducing labor pain during active phase of labor among nulliparous women at Ismailia governmental hospitals. Design: quasi-experimental design was adopted in this study. Sample: convenient sample of 64 nulliparous women who fulfilled the selection criteria were assigned into the study and the control groups. Settings: data was collected from two settings; delivery wards in the Suez Canal University and general hospitals in Ismailia City. Tools of data collection: two tools; Structured Interview and Short form McGill pain questionnaire were used. Results: the mean score of pain decreased after back massage in interventional group compared to control group (at cervical dilatation 4-5 cm, 6-7 cm and 8-10 cm). There was a statistical significant decrease in overall intensity of total pain in interventional group after first, second and third interventions compared to the control group (P= 0.001, 0.001 and 0.000, respectively). Conclusion: the study established that, back massage with lavender oil is an effective method for reducing pain during active phase of labor among nulliparous women.
