Abstract Embedded screw piles are extensively used where the foundations of structures are subjected to inclined tensile loads. They allow the transmission of the pullout load to the soil at a greater depth and farther away from the structure. Screw piles of various types are now used for the vertical uplift resistance of submerged pipelines and transmission towers. Screw piles also are used for inclined or horizontal tieback resistance of waterfront and earth-retaining structures. The screw piles which obtain their strength through the shear strength and dead weight of the surrounding soil, are a thin foundation system. The different types of screw piles which are used in geotechnical engineering, include grout system, helical system and plate system. |
