Abstract

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), it has a few symptoms in the early stages, but eventually leads to vision loss or complete blindness. It is called the silent thief of sight because most patients are unaware that they have the disease until they have vision loss. Therefore the current study was conducted to assess the informational needs among patients with glaucoma. A convenient sample of 160 adult newly diagnosed patients with glaucoma attending The glaucoma out-patients clinics at El Manial Specialized University Hospital was recruited to fulfill the aim. A descriptive/exploratory research design was conducted to achieve the aim of the present study by using tool I, demographic and medical related data and tool II, Glaucoma Information Assessment tool. The study result revealed that (70.6%)were males, and (29.4%) were females and their age ranged between 40 to 60 years with mean of (47.11±14.2), it was concluded that the studied patients had total unsatisfactory level of information regarding to basic information of glaucoma(83%), risk factors for glaucoma (66%), treatment of glaucoma (70%) and information about eye drops (67%), While, (56%) had satisfactory level of information regarding to post operative care. There were statistically significant difference in the level of total information and age, occupation, and marital status, while, the study found no statistical significant difference with the rest of demographic data. Despite the significance of knowledge related glaucoma in prevention of blindness, little information is available about glaucoma. In summary, the results revealed that, there is a need to focus on informational needs for patients with glaucoma through enhancing creativity, learning resources and continuous educational opportunities for those types of patients. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that, replication of the study on a larger probability sample selected from different geographical areas. Establishing information, education and communication strategies to increase the awareness of glaucoma to aid early diagnosis and treatment, thus preventing blindness from glaucoma. A pamphlet and boosters was also designed as a resource care tool to enhance the knowledge deficit on glaucoma.
