Abstract

Admission of low birth weight (LBW) neonates in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) causes their deprivation of tactile and sensory stimulation. The exciting benefits of oil massage therapy (OMT) encourage the researcher to conduct it as an essential and integrated part of the daily nursing care for the medically stable LBW neonates therefore, the study aimed to investigate the effect of OMT on anthropometric parameters and behavioral state of stable LBW neonates. A quasi- experimental design was selected for this study. A purposive sample of 60 LBW neonates selected from the NICU of El Manial Pediatric Hospital - Cairo University- Egypt. They were divided into two equal groups: thirty neonates subjected to the OMT in addition to routine care (intervention group) and thirty neonates were received routine care (control group). Four tools were used for data collection, tool I: Neonatal characteristics assessment sheet, tool II: Oil Massage therapy (Field’s massage: 1986) protocol, tool III: Neonatal anthropometric parameters measurements, and tool IV: Neonatal behavioral state and physiological parameters assessment checklist. Results revealed that the intervention group demonstrated a significant increase in weight, length, and head circumference and become calmer (quiet alert) than the control group. Based on the findings it was concluded that, OMT enhanced anthropometric parameters and improved behavioral state of stable LBW neonates and recommended that applying OMT as an effective, safe, and non-invasive intervention for neonates in the NICU of El Manial Pediatric Hospital Cairo-University as standard care and replication of the study on a large number sample to validate and for better generalization of the findings.
