Abstract The idea of this thesis is based upon the fact that news discourse has the power to change the reader’s opinions through some overt and covert linguistic resources. The post 30 June events in Egypt captured the interest of the national and international media but each news network covers the same event from a completely different ideological perspective. Such notable discrepancy among news agencies is due to the fact that there are hidden ideological reasons behind this contradiction. This thesis examines the relationship between language and ideology and how such relationship is represented in the analysis of hard news stories. Relying on Appraisal Theory developed by Martin and White (2005), this thesis tries to show that news structures are working apparatuses of ideology and store meanings which are not always obvious for readers. Through a comparative linguistic analysis of the Egyptian news website Al-Ahram online and the online version of the British newspaper the Guardian with possibly opposing ideologies, the researcher attempts to reveal how these ideologies are represented via a variety of strategic techniques of impersonalisation in electronic media with regard to covering the same event |
