Abstract

TEF fistula is one of the most serious surgical emergencies in neonates, which require immediate diagnosis and correction. Neonates may be with other serious anomalies, such as congenital heart disease, imperforate anus, intestinal obstruction anal atresia. The incidence of these associations is around 20% in esophageal atresia population, but two or more anomalies occur in nearly half of patients. The incidence of TEF nationally was approximately 1 in 3,000 to 4,500 births with a slight preponderance of males in the ratio of 3:2. Most cases occur sporadically. Nurses play an important role in caring of neonates with TEF as the infant require close observation and intervention to maintain a patent air way. Nursing interventions are different in the preoperative and post-operative periods. This study was aim to assess nurses‟ knowledge and performance regarding neonates with TEF in NICU at Assuit University Children Hospital.
A convenient sample of 40 nurses caring for neonates with TEF who admitted to NICU at Assuit university children hospital. Tools of the study Two tools were used by researcher to collect the required data, structured questionnaire sheet and structured observational checklist sheet. Main results of this study revealed that: Nurses had unsatisfactory level (62.5%) of knowledge and satisfactory level (67.5%) of performance regarding neonates with TEF. More than three quarters (77.5%) of the studied nurses were in the age group from 20 to less than 30 years, (20%) of them were in the age group from 30 to less than 40 years and (2.5%) of them were in the age group less than 20 years (60%) of the studied nurses graduated from secondary school of nursing, (25%) of them graduated from technical institute of nursing and (15%) of them graduated from health technical institute. There was statistically significant difference was found between the studied nurses’ performance and their years of experience p-value (0.013). There was statistically significant difference was found between total mean scores of the studied nurses, level of knowledge and performance p- value (0.045). There was no statistically significant difference was found between the studied nurses’ knowledge and their personal data. There was a significant positive correlation between the studied nurses total scores of knowledge andperformance .(r =0.436 .p= 0.005).r
