Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women and develops in nearly 30% of all men above the age of 50 years. The major studies evaluated if cancer therapy could use chemotherapy from drugs exist in biological agents with minimal or no adverse effects. The wide application of metformin and thymoquinone in modern medicine has drawn growing attention to their chemical compositions. Metformin is an antidiabetic drug extracted from the herb Galega officinalis which has recently shown anticancer properties in vitro and in vivo. Thymoquinone is extracted from the black cumin Nigella sativa. It is widely used to prevent and treat colds, wounds, ulcers, rheumatism, diabetes and it showed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumoral effects. The presented study is an attempt to investigate the effects of the metformin, thymoquinone and their combination on MCF7 breast cancer cells in vitro with special concern to its underlying mechanisms.
