Abstract

D
ermatochalasis occurs as a part of facial aging. Factors that contribute to laxity and redundancy of eyelid tissues included: gravity, Loss of elastic tissue in skin and weakening of connective tissue.
Some systemic diseases may predispose patients to develop dermatochalasis such as; thyroid eye disease, trauma, hereditary angioneurotic edema, Ehler’s-Danlos syndrome and amyloidosis.
The art of surgical correction of dermatochalasis is found in the ability to improve the cosmetic appearance of periocular region in affected patients.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure of choice to correct both functional and cosmetic concern related to dermatochalasis.
In the current study 10 patients (20 eyelids) of upper eyelids dermatochalasis underwent upper eyelid blepharoplasty, 7 cases [70 %] were females and 3 cases [30 %] were males, with the mean age at time of presentation was 51.83 years ±6.46SD, there was associated lower eyelids skin redundancy noticed in 7 patients [70 %].
The patients presented in this study had no previous eyelid surgeries or injuries, there was no intraoperative or postoperative complications detected in this study.
Success was defined by highly increase in the mean crease to lid margin distance postoperatively (ranged from 5-11 mm) than mean crease to lid margin distance preoperatively (range from 5-8 mm) and patients satisfaction following surgery were very high (80 %); all patients noticed the improvement of upper eyelids appearance postoperatively with more rested and youthful look of their eyelids.
