Abstract

Incidence of cervical cancer may be up to six times higher in developing countries than in developed countries due to lack of screening programs. Several cervicovaginal cytological classification systems have been suggested since Papanicolaou’s classification, with the aim of screening for precursor lesions of cervical cancer. The classification system most used worldwide is American and known as the Bethesda System.
Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), also called cervicoscopy consists of naked-eye visualization of the uterine cervix (without magnification) after the application of diluted acetic acid, to screen for cervical abnormalities. A solution of 3% to 5% acetic acid is used, and the cervix is illuminated with a light source. If low-power magnification is used, the technique is called VIA with magnification (VIAM). The purpose is to identify acetowhitening areas, which may indicate tissue undergoing precancerous changes.
The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of cervical cancer, at Minia governorate in women by visulation of the cervix using 3 – 5 % acetic acid (VIA).
This prospective study was conducted on 3000 women visited the outpatient clinics of primary health care units in the period between 20 until 60 years. The study was conducted during the period from January 2015 to December 2016.
