Abstract

The prevalence of gout is one of the highest disease in the world. Acute and chronic gouty arthritis lead to significant pain, activity limitation and disability (Choi, 2011). This study aimed to determine the effect of implementing a teaching modules on clinical outcomes of patients with gout.
Research Setting: The study was carried out in orthopeadic out patient clinics of Menofia University Hospital.
Subjects: A purposive sample of 60 gouty patients were selected and divided randomly and alternatively into two equal groups, 30 patients for each:
A. Study group (1): was exposed to teaching modules along with routine hospital care.
B. Control group (2): were exposed to routine hospital care only.
Tools of the study:
Four tools were utilized by the researcher for data collection. These tools were:
Tool 1: Structured interview questionnaire developed by the researcher to assess patient’s knowledge about disease process and it’s management. It include three parts:-( Sociodemographic data , medical data and patient’s knowledge)
Tool II : Gout clinical assessment tool developed by the researcher except part one developed by Taylor et al., (2007) to assess the clinical status of the subjects. It include three parts:- (Health assessment questionnaire disability index, clinical assessment and diagnostic test) Tool 3: Potential Hydrogen (PH) scale devolved by Roberts (2009) to measure acidity or alkalinity of the urine.
Tool 4: Nutritional assessment sheet developed by the researcher except part one to assess the nutritional status of the subjects. It included two parts:- (Food Frequency Questionnaires and anthropometric measurements)
The main results of the present study were:
1. There were significant improvement of total and subtotal knowledge scores for study group than control group post teaching and during the follow up than pre teaching modules.
2. There were significant improvement of almost all clinical out come (joint pain, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, limitation of joint motion and keeping uric acid within normal range) of gout for study group than control group post teaching and during the follow up
3. There were highly statistical significant differences existed between both study and control groups regarding consuming alkaline diet post and follow up the teaching module.
Conclusion: all criteria of clinical outcomes were improved among study group post teaching modules and during follow up period compared to control group than pre teaching modules.
Recommendation: Patient education should be ongoing process for patients with gout and continued their lives to improve their clinical out comes.
