Abstract

This study is designed to compare the potential neuroprotective effect of the hematopoietic cytokine erythropoietin to the neuroprotective effect of human umbilical cord stem cells transplantation. The study aims to compare the role played by each strategy and reveal if both together can potentiate one another or not.
Study Questions:
What is the difference between the role of HUCB stem cells and that of EPO on the injured sciatic nerve of rats? and what could be their combined effect?
Research Hypothesis:
- injecting EPO has a neuroprotective impact following sciatic nerve injury in rats by certain mechanisms.
-HUCB stem cells have a role in the neuronal regeneration following sciatic nerve injury in rats by other mechanisms.
- Combined effect of HUCB and EPO will potentiate the neuronal regeneration and the recovery after sciatic nerve injury in rats.
