Abstract

The area of Nile Delta has currently witnessed rapidly growing human population during the last decades. This development has been accelerated by the construction of new settlements. Unfortunately, this urban development tends to be a chaotic in the absence of any geotechnical planning and considerably reflects the lack of interaction and communication among urban planners, geoscientists and decision makers. Alluvial soil is considered a worldwide problem that causes extensive damage to civil engineering structures. Alluvial soil of low strength and high compressibility behavior usually cause many differential settlements, crack, breaking up of pavements and building foundations were observed in Tanta district, Egypt. The necessity to construct engineering structures on the deposits in a challenging task for the civil engineering and there is need to establish geohazard zonation maps for safe urban extension suitable for construction and the evaluation of the spatial variability inherent in the studied parameters. The present study aims to evaluating the geotechnical properties of the alluvial soils and geologic hazards which assist to provide a scientific basis for an effective land use planning and urban development for the study area.
