Abstract

Two experiments were achieved in the New Valley growing conditions to grow two commercial cultivars of tomato (Super Strain B) and cowpea (Kafr El-Sheikh) under natural different temperature stresses of the New Valley conditions. The experiments were done in different growing seasons in two years of 2012 and 2013. The two field experiments were carried out at the private farm of Mousa’s family, Asmant Village, Dakhla, New Valley governorate, Egypt. Tomato and cowpea plants were foliar sprayed three times (one month after plantation of tomato seedlings and one month after plantation of cowpea seeds) with some chemical compounds e.g., ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), humic acid (potassium humate) and ascorbic acid with the recommended doses and study the effects of these substances on growth and productivity of those two crops under high and low temperature. The control plants were sprayed with distilled water.
Results showed that these substances enhanced the vegetative growth of tomato and cowpea plants comparing to the non-treated (control) plants. The treatments also increased the tomato plant fresh and dry weights, yield of the tomato fruits and their content of vitamin C and TSS. On the other hand, these foliar treatments increased green pods and dry seeds per plant and total yield/fed along with increasing the leaves and branches content of NPK and seeds content of protein of cowpea. Moreover, these used substances enhanced the cowpea plants tolerate the high temperature during the growing hot summer seasons. Thus, we strongly recommend foliar spraying tomato and cowpea along with other similar plants with these chemical substances in the similar growing conditions in order to enhance plants growth, yield and increase the heat tolerance capabilities of these plants under heat and cold stress growing conditions.
