Abstract

The present work was planned to investigate the effect of
azithromycin and ginseng on normal and P. multocida infected
rabbits through the evaluation of hematology, blood chemistry,
antioxidants and associated lesions in rabbits.
This study was carried out on ninety, 40 days old rabbits
which divided equally into 6 gps. group (1) was kept as normal
control. group (2) was injected I/V by azithromycin once daily for
3 days started from the 6th day of the study. group (3) was
administrated ginseng orally for 22 successive days started from 1st
day of the study. group (4) was infected intranasally with P.
multocida at the 1st day of the study for 2 successive days. Group
(5) was infected intranasally with P. multocida at the 1st day for 2
successive days and injected I/V at the 6th day of the study by
azithromycin for 3 days. group (6) was administrated ginseng
orally for 22 days started from 1st day, infected intranasally with P.
multocida at the 1st day for 2 successive days and injected I/V at the
6th day of study with azithromycin once daily for 3 days.
Two blood samples were collected one day, one week and
two weeks pt. from marginal ear vein for hematological
examination and biochemical assay. Tissue samples from lungs,
livers and kidneys were collected after collection of blood, for
estimation of antioxidant status and histopathological
examination.
Regarding to the clinical signs, rabbits of gps.(2&3) were
apparently normal all over the experimental periods. Infected
rabbits with P. multocida (gp.4) showed loss of appetite, ruffled fur,
pyrexia, emaciation, sneezing, breathing difficulty, bilateral nasal.
