Abstract Mesenteric ischemia, a spectrum of disorders with multiple etiologies still carries significant morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in both diagnosis and treatment, prompt diagnosis and supportive care remain critical for successful outcome. New imaging techniques, endovascular therapy and emerging research may improve our approach to this deadly condition. Although mesenteric ischemia is one of the least common causes of abdominal pain, it is associated with extremely high risk. Despite the variety of presentations and causes of mesenteric ischemia, it always presents a diagnostic challenge and it has the potential for catastrophic, life threatening consequences. Early consideration and evaluation of this disease and its underlying causes in patients with abdominal pain are critical to timely diagnosis and improved outcomes. |
