Abstract

When a child with cognitive impairment (Cl) is born, parents need assistance in promoting
iormal developmental skills that are almost automatically learned by other children. So, The
urn of the present study ”vas to assess ADLs of mildly mentally retarded children, plan,
rnplcment and evaluate NIP based on actual need assessment for those children. The present
tudy was carried out at EI Tarbya EI Fekrya governmental school serving mildly mentally
etarded children in Port Said city. The sample of the present study were 34 child. Two tools
”ere used to collect data; questionnaire quoted from child’s medical school records to check
,iosocial data and adopted observation checklist that was used twice pre \ post program
itervention for assessing the children’s degree of independency related to daily living
ctivities. Results of the study revealed that about two thirds of studied children (61.76%)
/ere males while rest of them were females, their ages ranged between 8 and J 2 years. It was
ound that all skills of activities of daily living (ADLs) namely; eating, drinking, dressing,
rooming, personal hygiene and toileting skills are improved post intervention comparing with
re intervention with statistical significant difference in all of them. In the light of these results
• can be suggested to: design a periodic training programs for mildly mentally retarded
hildren and their parents according to their actual needs in area of daily living activities, to
elp them to grow and develop to their optimal capacities to be independent in their life.
urther studies should be done to determine the actual variable that affect improvement of
iildly mentally retarded children in activities of daily living then. it can be controlled and
nproved.
