Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is one of the most common causes of hair loss affecting both males and females. Recent studies reported elevated tissue level of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in balding scalp compared to haired scalp in human males. The aim of our study is to measure the serum level of PGD2 in AGA in both males and females.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Thirty nine subjects with AGA were included in this study (Nineteen females and twenty males) and compared with thirty four normal individuals (Nineteen females and fifteen males). All participants were subjected to detailed history taking and dermatological examination including the degree and the duration of AGA. Anthropometric measurements were carried out including (weight, height) and body mass index. Prostaglandin D2 levels were estimated in both patients and controls and were correlated to age, sex, BMI and disease duration.
RESULTS:
Our results shows no statistically significant difference between patients and controls as regards to the serum level of PGD2 (p-value >0.05). However, there was statistically significant negative correlation between the serum level of PGD2 and each of age, disease duration and BMI among patients (p-value < 0.05).
CONCLUSION:
We suggest that PGD2 may have a role in the pathogenesis of AGA.
