Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common infections that
colonizes the gastric mucosa.(22) Its prevalence is about half of the
population. It has the capability to induce chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer
disease, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma.(14)
When the bacterium colonizes the gastric mucosa, abundant
amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like superoxide anion and
reactive nitrogen species (RNS) like nitric oxide (NO) are generated
within the gastric mucosa leading to gastric mucosal oxidative stress
which represents one of the most important mechanisms in the
pathology of helicobacter pylori infection.(241)
These oxygen free radicals also cause lipid peroxidation leading
to production of large amounts of malondialdehyde.(231) In the
inflamed tissues caused by Helicobacter pylori, the cells produce
antioxidant enzymes like catalase, glutathione peroxidase and
superoxide dismutase to defend themselves from the increasing
amounts of free radicals produced by the bacterium to induce
pathological changes.(232)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress
condition in the gastric mucosa of Helicobacter pylori-infected
children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS
This study was carried out upon 30 children infected with
Helicobacter pylori with their ages ranged from 7-15 years with a mean
value of 11 ± 2.65 years who were attending the Hepatology Unit,.
