Abstract Leukemia is the most common malignancy in childhood. The role of pediatric oncology nurse has developed extensively overthe last 15 years. The aim of this study was to assess quality of nursing care provided for children with leukemia receiving chemotherapy by measuring the level of nurse ”s knowledge and practice while dealing with children receiving chemotherapy. This research study was conducted at Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt (CCHE, 57357). A descriptive study design was used on 105 nurses represent all nurses dealing with leukemic children at various hospital locations, by using a structured questionnaire sheet for knowledge and observational checklist for practice. The results showed that slightly more than half of the studied nurses had a satisfactory level of total knowledge and more than two third of the studied nurses had adequate level of total practice. These findings revealed that total practice is better than total knowledge and that necessitated that nurses should receive a training programs. Special training programs should be designed and constructed for nurses in this area to reinforce their knowledge and skill in chemotherapy administration and developing high standard of nursing care with continuous evaluation and establishing new standard checklist suitable for their practices depending on international guidelines. |
