Abstract Functional synbiotic foods are confirmed to have beneficial effects on health. However, only few well-performed studies have looked at clearly defined health effects such as lowering serum cholesterol concentrations. Hypercholesterolemia is strongly associated with coronary heart disease and arteriosclerosis and decreasing serum cholesterol is an important treatment option.
