Abstract

Nocturia is defined by the International Continence Society as the interruption of sleep one or more times at night to void (Van Kerrebroeck et al., 2002).
The estimated prevalence of nocturia has varied, largely due to differences in symptom assessment, study population, data collection, and definitions used (Hunskaar, 2005).
Sleep plays a vital role in physical and mental functioning. Frequent nocturnal awakening and disturbed sleep lead to poor physical and mental health (Ancoli-Israel et al., 2011).
Quality of life (QoL) is negatively affected in the majority of individuals who experience nocturia (≥1 void per night); this is perhaps to be expected of a condition that disrupts healthy sleep patterns (Scarpa et al., 2001).
The current study was carried out to assess the prevalence of nocturia in elderly males and its impact on sleep quality and QoL. The study enrolled 200 elderly males aged 60 years old and above.
All participants were recruited from geriatric clubs in Cairo (El-Shams club, El-Tayaran club, Al-Wayly club and Sayedat Misr institution).
