Abstract The present thesis comprises a brief survey covering the synthesis and biological importance of compounds bearing pyrimidine, pyrazole and isoxazole scaffolds. In addition to a brief survey of the biological activities exhibited by compounds bearing these heterocycles within its scaffold including the antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-cancer and many other biological activities. In this study, the synthesis of the targeted pyrimidinone bearing compounds IIIa-d and IVa-d was achieved by the reaction of the intermediates IIa-d with urea or thiourea in the presence of sodium ethoxide. The investigation also involves the reaction of hydrazine hydrate with Va-d in absolute ethanol to produce compounds VIa-d. In addition to the reaction of Va-d with phenylhydrazine to produce compounds VIIa-d and without the addition of any acid or alkali. Furthermore, the thesis involves the reaction of Va-d with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to produce the methyl-isoxazole derivatives VIIIa-d. The structural elucidation of the new compounds IIIa-d, IVa-d, VIa-d, VIIa-d and VIIIa-d was supported by IR, 1H and 13C NMR, mass spectral data, high resolution mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Twenty compounds produced from this study were subjected to antimicrobial analysis which showed that some compounds exhibited good antimicrobial activity. |
