Abstract

In this work the Alam El Bueib and Khatatba formations, located in TUT oil field, north western part of Western Desert, have been evaluated using geochemical analysis of source rocks, conventional core and petrophysical analyses of reservoir rocks measured in ten wells ( TUT-01X, TUT-03, TUT-11, TUT-21X, TUT22X, TUT-52, TUT-76, TUT-81, TUT-84 and TUT-85) and geochemical data were considered from two wells (TUT-21X and TUT-22X). A GIS geodatabase of source and reservoir units in the two formations has been built for modelling of different elements. The obtained results are summarized in the following paragraphs A. Source rock analysis Thermal and geochemical modelling is one of the most widely used techniques used to predict the validity of an area for future oil and gas discoveries. The evaluation of the source rocks in the study area was taken in two steps: 1. The first step was to analyze the geochemical parameters including TOC, S1, S2, HI and vitrinite reflectance (Ro %) representing the two formations in the two studied wells (TUT-21X and TUT-22X). 2. The second step was to use results from step one to predict hydrocarbon maturation and construct burial history diagrams to reveal the thermal history and the timing of hydrocarbon generation in the studied basin. Conducting the above mentioned two steps has led to following outcomes: 1. The Alam El Bueib Formation is considered to have a fair to good source rock while Khatatba Formation is considered to have a fair to very good source rock.
