Abstract

In the present thesis, we have documented the
biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by reduction of aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO3) using
some medicinal plants. We have also examined their electrochemical and optical properties.
The thesis covers the following chapters:
Chapter I: Background and Introduction1-Background: It gives a brief description about Nanochemistry field. It reviews synthesis, characteristics and applications of nanostructures including silver nanostructures.2 Introduction:It highlights the advantages of biological synthesis of AgNPs
over the chemical and physical methods.
It reviews the biological Methods used in the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. It also demonstrates the role of plant biomass in the biosynthesis process.
Chapter
II: Materials, Apparatus and Experimental It describes the plant materials and chemicals used in the biosynthesis
process. The plant materials include Rosmarinus officinalis, Ambrosia maritima and Origanum majorana
. The chemicals used are silver nitrate and phosphate
buffer solution (PBS). It also demonstrates the apparatus used in the characterization of the biosynthe
sized AgNPs. The apparatus used in this study
are:1-Ultraviolet Visible (UV-VIS) spectrophotometer2-Transmission Electron Microscope
(TEM)3-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer(FT-IR)4-Zeta PALS5-Cyclic voltammetry(CV)6-Spectrofluorophotometer At the end of this chapter, we explain the methods used in the extraction of the plants and the biosynthesis of the silver nanoparticles.
Chapter III: Results and Discussions
It demonstrates our results that proved the formation of
AgNPs using the extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis
, Ambrosia maritima and Origanum
majorana. It also characterizes the biosynthesized AgNPs as follow:1-Particle size analyzer
data showed that the sizes of AgNPs biosynthesized by
Rosmarinus officinalis, Ambrosia maritima and
Origanum majorana were 55, 39 and 40 nm, respectively.2-TEM analysis showed that AgNPs biosynthesized by Ambrosia maritima and Origanum majorana were generally found to be spherical in shape with average size of 30 and 35 nm, respectively.
