Abstract

The present study was a descriptive study aimed to evaluate mother‘s awareness about food additives, nutritional behavior and the advertising effect on purchase the food products which containing food additives, also, the popularity reasons for consuming the food products containing food additives. Sources of information about food additives and association between socioeconomic factors and awareness of mother’s level about food additives and nutritional behavior also evaluated. Data was collected using a questionnaire that was distributed to 600 randomly selected sample from urban and rural of Sharkia Governorate and Bedouin of Matrouh Governorate. The results showed that the highest percentage of mother’s age was obtained in Bedouin area where reached to 62.35% in age (18 > 33 years) and it‘s followed by 49% in rural area and 41.30% in urban area of mother‘s age (33-48 years). The highest percentage of mothers was 88.24% in Bedouin area for housewife. The results indicated that the highest percentage of academic mothers was cleared in urban area and it was 52.17%. Also, the highest percentage of family‘s income for (more than 4000 L.E. per month) was 34.78% in urban area as compare with rural and Bedouin. Furthermore, the results revealed that the highest values of mother‘s awareness about food additives, health effects of consumption of artificial additives, healthy and unhealthy nutritional habits were recorded in urban area. Whereas, the lowest value was obtained in Bedouin area about awareness of food additives and health effects of consumption of artificial additives. In addition, the percentage of respondents consumed processed foods for three times weekly in rural (50.50%) then Bedouin (49.41%) and urban (39.57%). The results showed that the majority of participants (urban 82.17, rural 89.5%, Bedouin 81.18%) agree that advertising focus on the advantages of processed foods encouraged them to buy it. On the other hand, the most of respondents (68.26, 89.00, and 91.76%) in urban, rural and Bedouin, respectively, agree that the highest reasons for consuming the food products containing food additives was the packages used to preserve processed foods which contain inscriptions and bright colors attract attention especially for children. The highest sources of information about food additives were friends and relatives (82.5%) of mothers in rural area. 22.06 and 16% in urban and rural, respectively, had some guidelines for the healthy nutrition from government agencies. The results showed that the major reason caused food poisoning for mother’s children eating crackers and chips by the ratio of (51.5, 61.4, and 100.0%) in urban, rural and Bedouin, respectively. Finally, The results demonstrated that there is positive significant correlation between level of mother‘s awareness about food additives and age, job, education, family’s income and mother’s income. from our results we recommend to increase education level of mothers in Bedouin area.
