Abstract

Environmental degradation in coastal areas is caused by trace metals, which are a group of water pollutants. The accumulation of trace metals in the tissues of aquatic organisms is at concentrations many times higher than their concentrations in water. This accumulation can cause physiological impairment when biomagnified in the food chain in human consumers (Mitra, et al. 2012). The direct discharges of trace metals contaminate estuarine waters. This contamination can accumulate in sediments, or be captured by living organisms. The accurate estimation of natural levels of these metals in the biota and in the physical environment can give an accurate evaluation of the degree of heavy metal contamination at a given place (Pérez-López, et al. 2003).
