Abstract

Scabies is a contagious, parasitic dermatitis caused by small mites called sarcoptes scabiei var hominids. It has a world-wide distribution that affects 300 million individuals annually. Scabies results from overcrowding, poor hygiene, malnutrition, ignorance, poverty, delayed treatment of primary cases and poor compliance with treatment. It spreads by direct prolonged skin to skin contact with persons already infected with scabies and household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels and beddings. Scabies may occur either sporadically in individuals or in outbreaks in healthcare institutions such as elderly homes.
Control of institutional scabies is associated with considerable work and economic burden, including isolation, patient’s treatment, environmental disinfection procedures, laundry and extra staffing. Infection control program should include some form of surveillance for infections, standard precaution, employee education, disinfection including laundering of clothes and beddings. Special attention to personal cleanliness and use of disinfectants.
The aim of the study is to
Determine the effect of nursing interventions on scabies control in governmental elderly residential homes in Alexandria.
