Abstract

Persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection often leads to the development of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Human cytosolic glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) include seven distinct classes, namely, Alpha (A), Mu (M), Pi (P), Sigma, Zeta, Omega and Theta (T). The aim of this study was to estimate the oxidant/antioxidant status and liver function tests in different stages of HBV infection. Also, detection the genotypes of GSTs including (GSTT1, M1, P1, A1, O1 and O2) in different stages of HBV infection and control healthy group.
The study focused on the determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), non enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant parameters and liver function profile tests. Also, GSTs genotypes (GSTT1, M1, P1, A1, O1 and O2) were determined. MDA and (GSR) were increased, while (GSH), total (GST), (GPx), (SOD) were decreased in N, A, CH, CI and HCC groups as compared to the C group. Also, the levels of (TP) and albumin were decreased but (ALT), (AST) activities and (TB) level were increased in all studied groups as compared to the C group. The results showed that wild GSTM1/GSTT1 genotype, GSTP1 isoleucine / isoleucine and GSTA1 (BB),GSTO1 AA and GSTO2 AA were decreased in N, A, CH, CI and HCC groups compared to the C group. However The genotypes null GSTT1, null GSTM1, double null GSTM1/GSTT1 and GSTP1 valine/valine, GSTP1 valine / isoleucine genotypes , GSTA1 (AA) , GSTA1 (AB), GSTO1 CA ,GSTO1 CC,GSTO2 AG and GSTO2 GG were increased in all studied groups compared to the C group.
