Abstract

With the rapid advances in the area of microprocessor in recent years, digital control has become more attractive and economical in a large number of applications. The main purpose of this thesis is to improve the steady state stability of the systems by designing a suitable digital controller. This thesis is studying the digital control systems, to instruct and connect digital computer to real systems for control purposes. In this thesis, design and analysis of digital controllers for systems under study are carried out. These analysis include the suitable computer programs designed for this purpose. The designing of linear feedback control system using state feedback for discrete system based onpole placement technique. The digital controller design of unstable discrete systems by using pole placement technique is presented.Pole placement design in state space system allows accurate placement of poles locations, when state variables are known. When the state variables are not usually directly measurable and not allowed for feedback, other type of digital controller is designedbased on state observer with full order state and reduced order state observers.
Two different systems are considered as cases of study to test the performance of the designed digital controller.
Case (I):Mechanical System
Digital controllers are designed based on pole placement and state observer techniques for Magnetically Suspended Balanced Beam (MSBB) system as an application of Active Magnetic bearing to improve system stability as well as the dynamic response of the system against the parameters variation.
Case (II):Automatic Voltage Regulator
Also, digital controllers are designed for controlling the regulator and exciter of power system using pole placement and state observer techniques. These controllers are used to achieve stability of power system and improve the system dynamic performance.
A MATLAB software program is used to obtain all computations results and drawings and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
