Abstract

Background: Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in females under the age of 20 at the time of delivery. Pregnancy can take place after the start of puberty before first menstrual period, but usually occurs after the onset of periods in well-nourished girls, menarche usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13.
Aim of the work: To evaluate the obstetrical complications and neonatal outcome of teenage primipara (age 14-19) in comparison with adult primpara females (age 20-29); via observational comparative prospective study,carried on women presented to maternity hospitals of Ain Shams University.
Summary: The study concludes that teenage primigravid patients are at higher risk of developing complications during the third trimester of pregnancy and during labor and early postpartum period with increased risk of neonatal morbidity. The study recommends raising the public awareness about hazards and risks of early teenage pregnancy and its possible maternal and fetal adverse outcomes, also the study encourages close antenatal care during all stages of pregnancy and delivery in a well equipped hospital that can serve the needs for these patients such as blood banks, intensive care units, well equipped operation rooms and neonatal intensive care units.
