Abstract

Password typing is the most common authentication method to secure computer systems. However, this method of authentication is the simplest method because users tend to choose passwords that are easy to remember. Due to their simplicity, passwords could be easily compromised through guessing, cryptanalysis attacks, hacking, or social engineering. This raised the need for other authentication methods that are more difficult to compromise. Object-based authentication methods that rely on something one has, such as tokens, cards, and IDs, are common, but they can be lost or stolen and for this reason, they are not practical for all authentication scenarios. With the rise of biometrics, biometric-based authentication methods started growing. They rely on something one is, rather that something one knows or has, and depend on behavioral and physiological characteristics of individuals. Examples of biometric-based authentication methods are methods that use fingerprints, iris, retinal scans, voice, signatures, and keystroke dynamics.
