Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a large health care burden. Incidence and prevalence rates across the world have been changed, with more countries aware of transfusion-related hepatitis C and more and more evidence supporting intravenous drug use as the leading risk factor of spread of the virus.
To be successful, HCV treatment, prevention, and vaccination strategies must be based on a sound understanding of the evolutionary regions most seriously affected. The main treatment goal in patients with chronic HCV infection is the prevention of progressive hepatic fibrosis by ealy diagnosis.
Researchers are interested in the relationship of iron overload in people with HCV. It would seem that liver disease would be more likely to progress in patients who have both conditions.
Present study aimed mainly to configurate:
1) The distribution of iron and ferritin levels in serum samples of patients with chronic HCV to evaluate the role of iron in the severity and course of disease.
2) The distribution of serum aminotransferases $ serum biliubin in patients with chronic HCV.
3) The effect of interferon containing treatment regimens, direct acting antiviral agents and herbal therapy on serum iron, serum ferritin and some liver biomarkers as (ALT, AST and Bilirubin) in HCV patients after treatment completion.
4) To condact a comparative study between the available antiviral therapies according to the SVR after treatment completion.
In conclusion this article provides a comparative study between interferon containing treatment regimens and interferon free regimens such as herbal therapy and sofosbuvir dual therapy: serum ferritin increases with higher levels in HCV patients who were treated with combined pegylated interferon-alfa (PEG-IFN)- ribavirin for 48 weeks than those treated with interferon, sofosbuvir and ribavirin for 12 weeks So, the duration of interferon treatment has an effect on serum ferritin levels while: interferon -free regimens including herbal therapy and s0f0sbuvir dual therapy : have little or no effect on serum ferritin levels.
On the other hand , serum iron level decreases in HCV patients who were treated with combined pegylated interfron-alfa (PEG- IFN) -ribavirin for 48 weeks and it is a common side effect of long duration of interferon therapy.
