Abstract

Hip fracture is considered one of the most fatal fractures for elderly people, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality and impaired functional capacity, particularly for basic and instrumental activities of daily living. Less than half of the hip fracture survivors will regain their pre-fracture level of functional capacity. The ultimate goal of caring for elderly people with hip fractures is to help them regain their pre-fracture level of independence as much as possible. Discharge plan is a process to help patients regain their prefracture ability of daily living after hip fracture. It starts from admission to the hospital and extends postoperatively in the hospital and after patient discharged to their home until patient recovering the maximum level of prefracture functional abilities. The discharge plan for geriatric patients with hip fracture includes instructions related to preoperative period such as position in bed and performing deep breathing exercise, measures adopted to avoid possible post-operative complications such as deep vein thrombosis, immobility and constipation, rehabilitative interventions which aim to improve functional abilities such as, safe exercise, adaptive techniques for performing activities of daily living, and nutritional recommendations.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of implementing a discharge plan on functional abilities of geriatric patients with hip fractures.
