Abstract

This study is concerned with the standards of textuality in the translation of The Thief and the Dogs written by Naguib Mahfouz and translated by Trevor Le Gassik and M.M. Badawi. This novel is chosen in particular as a corpus of this study as this novel is considered a great shift in the style of Naguib Mahfouz’s writings because in this novel he used the technique of stream of consciousness, this technique enables the narrator to show the mental process, thoughts and feelings of the characters. The study proposes three main questions which are :
-To what extent does the translator adhere to the standards of textuality in the target text?
- In case of non- adherence, how does it affect the translation?
- Can the standards of textuality be used as a tool for assessing the success of the translation?
It also provides detailed answers to these questions that the translator succeeds in applying the standards of textuality in some parts of his transltion, while he fails in others. Moreover, in the case of non- adherence to these standards, the translation loses its value and becomes inaccurate and unfaithful on the part of the target text reader. In addition to this, the study proves that textuality is as important as grammar and lexis in order to reach a successful translation.
