Abstract Background: Laparoscopic splenectomy, was first performed in 1992 and has since gained popularity. LS is feasible, effective, and safe with low morbidity rates and has become a rational alternative to open surgery. The advantages of shorter postoperative hospital stay and lower complication rates for the laparoscopic approach over open splenectomy have been confirmed in several studies. It has displaced open surgery for almost all indications of splenectomy. Before undergoing LS, patients undergo the same hematological preparation as for open one. Aim of the work: The aim of the study is to review the laparoscopic elective splenectomy, advantages, disadvantages in comparison with open splenectomy. Methodology: Complications of LS include intraoperative hemorrhage, intraoperative injury to adjacent organs and structures, postoperative bleeding, subphrenic collections or abscess, pneumonia and abdominal wall hematomas. Conclusion: LS is a safe and advantageous procedure in experienced hands that has displaced open surgery for almost all indications because it reduces complications and shortens recovery. Evolution of techniques and laparoscopic instruments such as LigaSure make the operation more easier and reduce complication and leading to increasing acceptance of laparoscopy. |
