Abstract

Nosocomial infection is an infection acquired in hospital by a patient who was admitted for a reason other than that infection. An infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. This includes infections acquired in the hospital but appearing after discharge and also occupational infections among staff of the facility. Burn injuries are common and major health problem throughout the world. Unfortunately the majority (>95%) of burn injuries occurs in developing countries and result in significant morbidity, disability, and mortality. There is an increased susceptibility to infection after a burn due to the loss of the protective skin barrier and depression of the immunological system. Standard infection control precautions are the cornerstone for protecting both patients and health care providers from nosocomial infection. The components of SICPs include hand hygiene, prevention of sharp injuries, use of PPE and environmental cleanliness as well as waste management and respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette. The aim of this work was to determine the frequency and common causative organisms of nosocomial burn wound infections among hospitalized patients in burn unit in Tanta University Hospital and study some risk factors associated with these infections. Also, this study aimed to assess the compliance of health care workers in the burn unit to standard infection.
