Abstract

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide performance enhancement of stand-alone wind-driven permanent magnet synchronous generating systems. A special attention has been paid for the problem of the variable nature of the wind speed, the fluctuation of load profiles and the unbalanced operating conditions. The load voltage magnitude and frequency are regulated under different operating conditions. Then, the controlled behaviour is improved to achieve the maximum wind-power extraction using storage battery bank. A load management strategy is proposed in order to optimize the utilization of the available wind energy resource. The control algorithm has been developed by controlling the duty cycle of the employed switch mode rectifier. In addition, the charging and discharging mode of the battery bank has been controlled, aided with a bidirectional DC-DC buck-boost converter, in order to maintain the DC-link voltage constant at the predetermined value. The magnitude and frequency of the load voltage has been maintained constant via controlling the modulation index of the load-side sinusoidal pulse width modulated inverter.
