Abstract

Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common health problem during neonatal period. It considers a cause of concern for nurses and physician and a source of anxiety for the parents. High bilirubin level may be toxic to the developing central nervous system and may cause neurological impairment even in term neonates. Appropriate nursing care minimizes the potential side effects, dangerous complications and enhances the effectiveness of phototherapy. The neonatal nurses’ practices and skills are usually influenced by their knowledge. So, nurses’ knowledge and practices have great efficacy on course of treatment delivered for neonates hyperbilirubinemia undergoing phototherapy.
The purpose of the study was to:-
Examine the effect of a designed nursing care protocol on clinical outcomes for neonates with hyperbilirubinemia.
Hypotheses:-
1. Implementation of a designed nursing care protocol will improve nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding care of neonates with hyperbilirubinemia on posttest than pretest.
2. Implementation of a designed nursing care protocol will result in improved clinical outcomes of neonates on post and follow up tests than on pretest
