Abstract

The River Nile and its two branches (Damietta and Rosetta) are considered to be the principal artery for the Egyptian life. The present work concerning with the study of the environmental status of Rosetta branch at the area extended from El-Kanater El-Khyria to Kafr El-Zayat City. Along, this area (approximately 125 km), there are different sources of pollution directly poured into the branch without any treatment. These sources are situated along the studied branch which can be divided into several types; sewage and domestic wastes as in case ofEl-Rahawy drain. The agricultural effluents are present in Soble drain. In addition to, industrial effluent produce from Soda & Salt and El-Malyia Companies in Kafr El-Zayat City. The effluents of these drains are normally contaminated with different heavy and trace metals. These would certainly lead to change in the water body from being clear oligotrophic to an alarming case of eutrophication leading to a decrease in fish as presented in the following table which illustrate the fish yield of common species in the different region of River Nile during 1998 (Fish Resources
development Authority).
