Abstract

The use of quantitative ultrasound methods for assessment of BMD in pregnancy carries the particular advantage of being free from irradiation effects as compared to other standard techniques for BMD measurements, such as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry or quantitative tomography, and is thus most ideal for use during pregnancy. Among the large amount of papers published, the key questions to be addressed from these studies include whether women lose bone during pregnancy, whether there would be recovery after delivery, what are the various factors that could influence the loss of bone during pregnancy, and whether such aggravating factors would predispose a woman to osteoporosis in later life. The use of quantitative ultrasound to evaluate BMD changes in pregnancy is explored in the current study.
