Abstract

The meaning of Environmental Architecture considered being one of the oldest aspects in the humanity and in architectural life. For centuries, the dominant form of structure has not only been strongly connected to the main supplements for an environmental comfortable life for the inhabitants but also it became a major tool to develop the building respondent to the outer environment .Lots of researches focus on the Environmental impact on building taking no considerations on the fast climatic and Environmental development that takes place every year. In addition to new technologies were invented in the 20th century in order to make inhabitants reach their maximum Environmental, Psychological and physiological (functional) comfort although human comfort relies on individual different required factors (Fulker, 1981).Thus, New technology appeared in the late of 20th century trying to cover all Environmental requirements for all inhabitants within a building, which is called ” Environmental Responsive Architecture technology”. (Fulker, 1981).Although the strong strategy and philosophy of this new technology on environmental buildings on the 21st century, there is strong impact of social, economic and political factors on these building technologies. These factors are also accompanied by aesthetic, traditional, Gender-based, mathematical and scientific values which have got large influence on environmental architecture history, due to the continues change of some of these values (Fulker, 1981).These values force responsive building technology to Acclimate, Adapt and interrelate with them. On other hand the research will discuss in detail the evolution of this technology in different cultures and the huge impact of it on human environmental, psychological and physiological comfort in different cities.
This thesis represents an investigation into Responsive structure building Technology renovation from 20th till 21st centuries. It also discovers the best tool of technology that changes the building from a dead solid object into an organism that comes alive. It attempts to make an argument for the use of responsive, dynamic surfaces in architectural structures. Architectural surfaces are everywhere, but are non-responsive and serve only a Structural / functional/ decorative purposes. The goal of the research is to add an additional dynamic dimension to these surfaces by leveraging the power of embedded sensors and computing technologies. Through a comparative study, the research will discuss the different advantages and disadvantages of responsive Environmental technologies used in buildings from ancient civilizations to 21st century.
