Abstract ln the prt:!sent tudy infection was searched for among febril neutropenic children having hematological malignancies, and the result were correlated with the serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL 8); as possible early diagnostic markers of severe life threatenin infections. Positive microbiological find ings were detected in 20 out the 30 patients (66.66%); 6 patients (30%) had bacteria l infections, on (5%) had fungal infection, and nine (45%) had viral infections. Eight o of the 9 viruses were detected in oral swabs, while 1 was detected by ce culture of PBLs. Mixed microbiologic find ings were found in 4 out the 20 patients; 1 patient had a mixed bacteri l infection, another patien had both a bacterict1 infect ion an<l a virus detected by ceii cu1ture of PBL and each of 2 of the patients had a virus detected orally and another i cell culture of PBLs. However, serum IL-6 and IL-8 failed to show significant correlation with any of the detected infections. |
