Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem and one of the most common chronic conditions affecting the older adult population. Type 2 DM it has major implications on quality of life, healthcare utilization and societal productivity of the older adult.
In order to achieve effective management of diabetes, it is essential to understand the personal factors and psychosocial context of these patients. A number of demographic, physical, and psychosocial factors have been found to impact on the illness development and health outcomes in diabetes. Health-related quality of life and self-care behaviors are important indicators to reflect health outcomes for diabetes mellitus.
The gerontological nurses play a critical role in empowering older adult patients with D.M to improve their health outcomes and better manage diabetes through encouraging self-care that improving their quality of life at can be done through providing them and their families with the required information and consultations.
This study aimed to identify factors that affect health outcomes of diabetic elderly patients.
Design: The study followed a descriptive correlation design.
Setting: The study was conducted at the endocrine outpatient clinic of Damanhour National Medical Institute at El-Behaira Governorate, Egypt.
Subjects: the study included one hundred and fifty (150) subjects of diabetic elderly patients from both sex, aged 60 years and above, and diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus for at least 6 months.
