Abstract

This study aims to assess the dietary behavior of the patients and their nutritional concepts as well as nutritional concepts of their care givers.Subjects and methods:Study was conducted on patients (350), physicians (32) and nurses (31) by answering a questionnaire about nutritional behaviors in patients and nutritional knowledge & behaviors of care givers.Results : Proteins, lipids and minerals have the main interest in physicians’ advices to CLDs patients in the following frequencies 93.4%, 96%, and 92.9% respectively. Physicians were depending on oral advices more than written ones. The main problem is physician – patients mis-contact as physicians have good knowledge but not reach the patient completely and/or correctly.The knowledge of nurses was less than needed but after educational program there was an increase in their knowledge state.Conclusions. 1. There are many mis-concepts about nutrition in the majority of patients with chronic liver diseases. 2. Malnutrition is evident in the patients group that could associated with higher morbidity and mortality later on. 3. Nearly half of these patients have no dietetic assessment and intervention. 4. Malpractice among health service providers, especial the nurse sector and sometimes negative patients attitude requires proper educational programs Recommendations. 1. Establish Egyptian nutritional guidelines for patients with chronic liver disease through national consensus. 2. Wide applications of educational programs to health providers either physicians or nurses. 3. Emerging the role of dietitian in nutritional support services in our hospital, hoping in the near future a sensible achievement in that area.
