Abstract

urses who work in psychiatric hospitals face additional
strain by the very nature of psychiatric work and
therefore may be more at risk than their colleagues in other
areas of health care. This additional strain had been labeled
by researchers as burnout. The nurses who work in
psychiatric hospitals are particularly vulnerable, due a lack of
community support, low staffing levels, stigma and client
pressures including the risk of violence, caring for patients in
inappropriate settings, with a reduced level of support and
increased administrative pressures all leading to an increase
in stress and burnout (Rudraprosad et al., 2012).
The study aimed to assess the level of the burnout among
nurses working in psychiatric hospital and identify the
factors that contribute to the burnout among nurses working
in psychiatric hospital.
Subjects and methods:
Research design:
A descriptive design was used in carrying out this
study.
Sitting:
This study was conducted in Abbasyia hospital for
psychiatric and mental health in Salah Salem Street, Cairo affiliated to Ministry of health consists of: Adult inpatient
unit, Pediatric clinic, Adolescent clinic, Francine psychiatric,
Geriatric unit, Rehabilitation unit and Addiction unit.
Sample size and characteristics
The sample composed of (180 nurse’s work in
psychiatric hospitals).
The sample was selected under the following criteria:
- Age range: from (25-55year). - Sex: both sexes.
- Educational level: -nursing diploma.
- Technical nursing institute. - Nursing bachelors.
Tools of data collection:
1-Interviewing Questionnaire:
An Arabic questionnaire was developed by the researcher,
after reviewing the related literature. It includes the following:
Socio demographic interviewing sheet;
A- It included data related to subjects‘ characteristics.
B- Factors that contribute to the burnout among the nurses
in the study subjects.
2- The staff burnout scale for health professionals (SBSHP) (Jones, 1980) developed by: Fernando Mansilla. Its measuring instrument consists of a total 30
questions, with 10 questions to lie on the social desirability
or the tendency of a person related (so-called lies items)
Openness (the social acceptance) and 20 questions that
cover four burnout factors.
3- General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28):
The GHQ (Hare et al., 1988)is a screening instrument
to determine the presence of psychiatric morbidity.
The findings of the present study could be summarized as
follows:
 The mean age of nurses was (Mean ±SD± 34.633), the
majority of the sample was males, the majority was
married, and the majority had secondary nursing diploma,
while the minority of them had a baccalaureate degree.
 In the light of the study findings, the study concluded that
there were many factors among the nurses who work in
psychiatric hospitals that contributed to burnout such as:
personal and family, work environment, factors related to
the relationship and communication at work, burden
career or workload, dissatisfactions with their job and
factors related to work management or administration.
 The majority of the nurses who work in psychiatric
hospital had ―average‖ level of burnout, and the minority
of them suffered from ―high‖ level of burnout. The general health status of the sample; more than half of
the samples in terms of physical complaints and anxiety
symptom had potential morbidity in their general health
conditions. Also, slightly less than half of the samples had
average range regarding social dysfunctions.
 The majority of the sample in terms of depression
symptom was in the healthy range.
 Certain socio-demographic variables of the nurses were
significantly associated with level of burnout (p< 0, 05).
 There was significant relationship between total burnout
scores and total factors contributing burnout (p< 0, 05).
 Also there was high significant relation of total burnout
level with total general health status among the studied
sample (p<0, 001).
The following recommendations inferred from the
study:
 Hospitals are strongly advised to conduct regular training
courses for the nurses who work in psychiatric hospitals
in order to manage the art of stress management and
develop healthy coping strategies to neutralize the
negative impacts of workload.
 Arrangement of regular meeting in order to discuss work
problems with supervisors.Maintain healthy work environment for the nurses who
work in psychiatric hospitals to minimizing burnout and
to ensure safety and high-quality patient care.
 Offer training programs that focus on effective
communication between nurses and physicians.
 Adequate supervisory and organizational support, peer
relationships and individual training courses are able to
improve the quality of patient care and diminish the chances
of post-traumatic stress disorder, job dissatisfaction and
burnout.
 Counseling, enhancement of coping skills, meditation
and health promotion may be effective modalities for
intervention.
 Proper assignment to duties and shifting schedules.
 Improving and maximizing hospital resources are also
promising possibilities.
