Abstract

Perfusion mri is an emerging non invasive imaging modality that can be easily incorporated into conventional mri study, providing complementary role in the functional imaging of brain tumors.this review explores the significance of perfusion mri in reflecting the microvasculature of brain lesions, with a pattern that mirrors the disease process, whether it is a malignant tumor (high capillary density), benign tumor (low capillary density), radiation necrosis (low capillary density) or brain abscess(low capillary density).Several brain lesions overlap in their imaging findings, even after contrast injection. Ares of blood brain barrier leakage are often encountered, yet is non specific to neoplasms.perfusion mri is a non expensive technique, especially when compared to other functional imaging modalities, such as pet and spect, which are expensive, moreover radio active tracer are limited by their availability and short half lives.worth mentioning, medical literature reported several other applications for Perfusion mri in the functional imaging of brain tumors, such as: predicting malignant degeneration in an otherwise low grade glioma. distinguishing brain abscess from nm enhancing brain tumor. follow up of tumor response to antiangiogenic drug therapy. guiding stereotactic brain biopsy. accordingly, it ls recommended to incorporate perfusion mri technique with conventional mri in the setting of brain tumor imaging.
