Abstract Eliminating situations in which falls are likely to occur has been the focus for preventing falls. This include environmental modification such as non slip floors, provision of hand holds on stairs and bathrooms. Although it is important to eliminate fall hazards as much as possible yet, it is important to make the individual as ”fall proof” as possible. The Tai Chi exercise is reported to have a significant impact in reducing falls by improving balance and functional independence. Tai Chi consists of a series of slow, rhythmic movements emphasizing trunk rotation weight shifting, coordination and gradual narrowing of lower extremity stance. The nature of Tai Chi movements follows that of the human biomechanic principles and anatomical alignment. It also helps to improve individual in their kinesthetic awareness and faster reaction time and consequently decrease falls moreover, the Tai Chi is reported to improve balance, flexibility and coordination in older adults. The aim of the study is to:- Determine the effect of tai chi exercise on balance and falls’ incidence among institutionalized elderly in Alexandria. Materials and Method:- Design: Quasi-experimental research design. Sittings: The study is carried out in four elderly homes in Alexandria namely; Dar El- Hanna, Dar El-Hadaya, Dar El-Hanan and Dar El-Saada. |
