The most common presenting symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is intermittent claudication (IC), with exercise-induced pain experienced in the calves, thighs or buttocks that is relieved with rest or it may be asymptomatic until it reaches an advanced stage. Diabetic peripheral arterial disease is the main cause of lower limb amputation in patients with diabetes as atherosclerosis is a progressive chronic inflammatory condition occurring in the walls of arteries, characterized by the formation of arterial lesions or plaques as a result of an inflammatory response to endothelial injury. |
