Abstract

The use of dewatering has been increasing in recent years for satisfactory performance of many civil engineering projects and has become one of the important branches in the field of the geotechnical engineering. In spite of that, the design of dewatering system is commonly based on empirical methods which are usually implemented with the guidance of long experience of the designer and the contractor.
ln this thesis, the case study of dewatering system of Elkobba Palace, which located northeast of Cairo, has been investigated. The site is surrounded by highly intensive urban area. The dewatering system is composed of thirteen deep wells and thirty-two piezometers. One hundred and four settlement points were installed to monitor settlement of different structural elements of existing buildings. Field measurements were recorded along eighteen months.
One of the main objectives of this research is to monitor the actual drawdown during pumping of a single and multiple wells. The full-scale
measurements were utilized to examine the reliability of using conventional mathematical methods and available computer program to predict the groundwater drawdown in sandy soil. Hence, the effect of lowering groundwater table on the settlement of existing structures is discussed.
A computer program had been upgraded to simulate groundwater flow during field dewatering. Results of the numerical analysis and their
verification using field measurements as well as other analytical and empirical methods are presented. Practical recommendations are also given for predicting drawdown using multiple deep wells...
